Why  8 Good Fingers?

Due to two unfortunate accidents with sharp objects, I only have 8 good fingers.  Really.  Therefore, one of my major goals in life is to not have to rename myself "7 Good Fingers".

Plus, I checked; the domain name is not available, apparently owned by a reckless Canadian lumberjack named Doug.

I grew up in South Dakota, and now live and play in Long Beach, California, which has one of the greatest music scenes east of the Pacific.

I have been fortunate enough in my life to sing with Liza Minnelli (late one night at the House of Blues, with Harry Dean Stanton!), act with Clint Eastwood, and have Richard Thompson show me a couple of chords.   I am a Jeopardy! champion.  I have taught 3rd Grade.

That's about it.  Thanks for listening!

History & Beyond

Songs and a Sound

It's all about good songs, isn't it?  Songs you can hum, songs you can sing along with, and especially songs you remember.   8GF is my outlet to try to keep the song alive in somewhat desperate times.

I'm influenced by a wide range of classic writers of pop songs:  Arlen and Yarburg, Rodgers and Hart, Chuck Berry, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Lennon and McCartney, Jimmy Webb, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Pete Townshend, Smokey Robinson, Ray Davies, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, Andy Partridge, Randy Newman, REM, Prince, Difford and Tilbrook, Harry Nilsson, Richard Thompson, Warren Zevon...I could go on and on.

The 8GF Band:  Kirk, Trevor Erickson, Edie Ofstedal, Tyler Watts.
